U.S. durable goods orders up


U.S. -- New orders for manufactured durable goods in June increased $1.8 billion, or 0.7 per cent, to $239.9 billion, says the U.S. Census Bureau. This increase, up four of the last five months, followed a one per cent May decrease.

Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.8 per cent. Excluding defense, new orders increased 0.7 per cent. Machinery, up following two consecutive monthly decreases, led the increase at $0.9 billion, or 2.4 per cent, to $37.3 billion.

Shipments of manufactured durable goods in June, up four of the last five months, increased $0.3 billion, or 0.1 per cent, to $238.2 billion. This followed a 0.1 per cent May decrease.

Transportation equipment, up following two consecutive monthly decreases, drove the increase at $0.5 billion, or 0.7 per cent, to $70.2 billion.

Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in June, up 14 of the last 15 months, increased $8.7 billion, or 0.8 per cent, to $1,096.8 billion. This was at the highest level since the series was first published on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 0.7 per cent May increase.

Transportation equipment, up nine of the last ten months, led the increase at $4.9 billion or 0.7 per cent to $681.0 billion.

Inventories of manufactured durable goods in June, up 14 of the last 15 months, increased $1.6 billion, or 0.4 per cent, to $399.7 billion. This was at the highest level since the series was first published on a NAICS basis and followed a one per cent May increase.

Transportation equipment, also up 14 of the last 15 months, led the increase at $0.9 billion, or 0.7 per cent, to $128.8 billion.
